World War 1
World War 1 began in 1914 and lasted 4 dreadful years till 1918. The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, in June 1914, was what's viewed to have caused World War 1. The conflict was between two main powers; the Central Powers including Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey, and the Allied Powers including France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan and the United States (from 1917).
World War 1 involved Trench Warfare and was mostly static, with no major mobility. Trench Warfare was supported by artillery, infantry, tanks (later on), aircraft and poisonous gas. It is estimated that 10 million died, 21 million were wounded, 7 million civilians died and 7.7 million were missing or imprisoned. This horrific war resulted in Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) being defeated. The Allied Powers won although Russia was defeated in the process. |
